Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Priscilla (master William Massey).

History: an American merchant ship (schooner, 3 men, 1 boy) bound from Annapolis to Bush River, Maryland, laden with wheat; taken on 6 March 1783 off Pool's Island in the Chesapeake Bay by the loyalist privateers Rover (Joseph Wayland commanding), and Dragon (George Younghusband commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation of papers brought in by teh prize master Jacob Extine, first lieutenant [of the Rover], 19 March 1783;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of the perishing nature of the cargo, 19 March 1783;
  • [CP 3]: libel in Wayland v The schooner Priscilla and her cargo;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Caesar, a slave of the ship's owner Aquila Paca otherwise Aquilla Peka of Maryland, 17 April 1783.
