Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Port-au-Prince (master William Finlay).

History: an American merchant ship (schooner, 20 tons, 6 men, 1 passenger), bound from South Eddistow [Edisto] near Charleston, South Carolina to St Augustine, Florida, laden with rice, indigo; taken on 5 December 1776 about 50 leagues west of Bermuda in latitude 31°20'N, longitude 68°W by the privateer Betsey (Alvara Lofthouse commanding), and then taken into custody of HMS Duke of Cumberland Packet (Francis James commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 12-CP 15]: commission of appraisement and sale, inventory, account of sale of part of the cargo, account current of the expenses of the sale etc.
  • [CP 16]: bills for expenses in connection with the upkeep and sale of the prize, originally numbered 1-8, now CP 16/1 to CP 16/8.
  • [CP 17-CP 18]: bills of expenses.

  • SP 1: certificate of registry for the Port-au-Prince (South Carolina) when Joseph Heath was master.
  • SP 2: receipted bill.
  • SP 3: clearance for the Port-au-Prince (South Carolina) when Joseph Heath was master. .
  • SP 4: clearance for the Dilligence, a former command of William Finlay.
  • SP 5: articles of agreement for the Dilligence, William Finlay master, Joseph Heath mate.
  • SP 6: certificate for the Dilligence to ship but not export 1000 bushels of salt.
  • SP 7: clearance from the Bahamas for Dilligence.
  • SP 8: certificate of registry for the Diligence (Bahamas) William Finlay master.
  • SP 9: customs certificate for Diligence from New Providence, Bahamas.
  • SP 10: clearance for Diligence from New Providence, Bahamas.
  • SP 11: certificate for Diligence giving bond not to unload anywhere but a British port.
  • [SP 12]: log of the Port-au-Prince to the day of capture (added from HCA 30/715/5 in July 2023).
