Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Murr of Salem (master William Munday).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (50 tons, 4 guns, 7 men) bound from Alexandria, Virginia to Havana, Cuba, laden with flour; taken on 7 March 1782 in the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia by the loyalist privateers Sukey (James Ridley commanding) and Trimmer (Jesse Turner commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Williams, petty officer of the Sukey, 20 March 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Turner and others v The brigantine Murr and her cargo, 20 March 1782;
  • [CP 3]: answer and claim of Charles Thorne on behalf of himself, John Slates and Jacob Frost, owners of the schooner Polly, taken by an American privateer on 22 April 1780, converted to a brigantine and renamed Murr, 27 March 1782.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1: the bottom half of the ship's register, owners Zachariah Burchmore, Josiah Orne, William Orne and Peter Lander, of Salem, 12 December 1781;
  • SP 2: clearance bond, Alexandria, 2 March 1782;
  • SP 3: bill of health for the crew [sic], Alexandria, 2 March 1782;
  • SP 4: ship's pass, Alexandria.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-7 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
