Captured ship: Montgomery of Providence, Rhode Island (master Phineas Potter).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 30 tons, 10 men) bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to Boston, Massachusetts, laden with molasses, rum, salt coffee; taken on 6 or 8 February 1778 in latitude 37°40'N, longitude 72°23'W by HMS Experiment (Sir James Wallace commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.
