Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Monique of Nantes (master Jacques Desrud).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (goelette, 110 tons, 6 guns, 21 men, 8 American passengers) bound from Nantes to Virginia, laden with salt, muskets, nails, bale goods; taken on 1 October 1778 in latitude 46°N, by the privateers Alderney (Samuel Lauga commanding) and Swallow (John de Jersey commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Intended voyage: from France to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-4) brought in by John de Jersey, 22 October 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of Jacques Desrud and Augustin Brée of Nantes, and a passenger Robert Nicholson surgeon, of Williamsburg, Virginia, commissioners' affidavit, taken at St Peter Port, 22 October 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 2 December 1778;
  • [CP 4]: translations of ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4:-

  • SP 1: customs bond, Nantes, 7 September 1778;
  • SP 2: permit to load provisions;
  • SP 3: ship's pass from Nantes to Cap François, Saint Domingue, 17 September 1778;
  • SP 4: muster roll.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-8 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
