Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Molly (master Thomas Tobey).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 90 tons, 6 men) bound from Dartmouth, Massachusetts to Cap François, Saint Domingue, laden with flour, lumber and fish; taken on 21 August 1776 in latitude 34°30'N, longitude 64°W by HMS Galatea (Thomas Jordan commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-2) brought in by the prize master Robert Pearce, master's mate, at Plymouth, 30 September 1776;
  • [CP 2]: depositions of Shubael Bunker and William Cotton of Nantucket, Massachusetts, commissioners' affidavit, taken at Plymouth, 1 October 1776 ;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 10 November 1776.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2 (Rhode Island papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owner Lemuel William, Newport, 16 November 1773;
  • SP 2: manuscript certicate that Thomas Toby has permission from the Committee of this town to proceed,having given bond agreable to the Continental Congress, Dartmouth 5 August 1776.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
