Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Molly (master Christopher Smith).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 25 tons, 5 men) bound from Virginia to Providence, Rhode Island, laden with tobacco; taken on 11 March 1782 of Cape Henry, Virginia by the loyalist privateer Jolly Tar (James Hanna commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Colin Menzies, 27 March 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Hanna v The sloop Molly and her cargo, 27 March 1782;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 27 March 1782;
  • [CP 4]: wrapper.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 17 April 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Rhode Island and Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners James Abarn, Jabez Bullock and John Bullock, 19 September 1781;
  • SP 2: detailed bill of lading of of cider, salt, earthenware crockery, onions, cheese, rum, powdered sugar, Providence, 21 November 1781;
  • SP 3: permission to unload at Port York River, 10 January 1782;
  • SP 4: certificate of unloading Port York River, Virginia, 20 February 1782;
  • SP 5: clearance bond for cargo of tobacco and wheat, Port York River, Virginia, 20 February 1782.
