Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Molly (master William Read).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (80 tons) bound from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with flour, bread; taken on 8 December 1776 of Cape Henlopen, Delaware by HMS Orpheus (Charles Hudson commanding) and HMS Daphne (St John Chinnery commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to [unknown].

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Hay, master's mate, 8 December 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Hudson v The sloop Molly and her cargo, 10 December 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1 (Pennsylvania papers):-

  • SP 1: manuscript clearance by the Naval Office, Philadelphia, on condition of producing a certifcate of delivery from the Naval Office or Committee of Inspection of a port within the United States, of if elesewhere under the hands and seals of three respectable merchants there residing, 30 November 1776.
