Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Molly (master Sanford Munro).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 43 tons, 1 gun, 6 men) bound from Providence, Rhode Island to St Croix, Danish West Indies, laden with tobacco, hoops, onions; taken on 18 March 1779 in latitude 33°0'N, longitude 62°0'W by the loyalist privateer Southerland (John Taylor commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Taylor v The sloop Molly and her cargo, 12 April 1779;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by John Taylor, 14 April 1779;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of William Wardwell, mate, of Rhode Island, 29 April 1779;
  • [CP 4]: wrapper.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (Rhode Island papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners Sanford Munro, Anthony D Wolfe and Charles D Wolfe, 8 February 1779;
  • SP 2: clearance, 6 March 1779;
  • SP 3: invoice of cargo;
  • SP 4: owners' instruction of Samuel Davis, part owner of the sloop and cargo.
