Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Molly (master Benjamin Cox).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 45 tons, 5 men) bound from Georgetown Winyah, South Carolina to Salem, Massachusetts, laden with rice, naval stores, pitch, indian corn, turpentine; taken on 24 April 1777 in latitude 34°20'N, longitude 74°15'W by HMS Galatea (Thomas Jordan commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master William Augustus Merrick, lieutenant, 10 October 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Jordan v The schooner Molly and her cargo, 13 October 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners Joseph Henfield and Edmund Henfield junior, Salem, 15 March 1777;
  • SP 2: clearance from Georgetown Winyah, 18 April 1777;
  • SP 3: invoice of cargo, 18 April 1777.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
