Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Molly (master Thomas Chamberlain).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 70 tons, 9 men) bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to North Carolina, laden with salt, molasses, dry goods; taken on 2 February 1778 in latitude 28°30'N, longitude 74°W by the loyalist privateer Levant (John Martin commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers (numbered 1-4) brought in by the prize master Richard Baker, mate, 4 March 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Martin v The sloop Molly and her cargo, 4 March 1778;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: depositions of James Troughton mate, and Thomas Chamberlain, both of Virginia, 12 March 1778;
  • [CP 5]: list of ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3 (Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1: French bill of lading;
  • SP 2: ship's register, owners Willing, Morris & Co, and Carter Braxton, 9 May 1777;
  • SP 3: certificate, Saint Domingue.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-8 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
