Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Molly previously Wolf (master Ambrose Bartlett).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 40 tons, 6 men) bound from Boston, Masssachusetts to Charleston, South Carolina and thence to Martinique, laden with cider, onions, deal planks; taken on 31 December 1777 nearest to Virginia in latitude 36°30'N, by the British privateer Ceres (Archibald Greig commanding), who emptied and set fire to the prize, but brought the crew and papers to London.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-12) brought in by Archibald Greig, 23 February 1778;
  • [CP 2]: deposition of Ambrose Bartlet, British subject, taken by Ducarel, surrogate of the court, 28 February 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 26 March 1778.

  • SP 8: business letter from Moore, Mackay & Blair, Boston to Messrs Moore, Mackay & Blair, St Pierre, Martinique, 1 December 1777;
  • SP 9: business letter from Archibald Blair, Boston to his brother, addressed to Archibald & John Blair, merchants, Martinique, 7 December 1777;
  • SP 10: business letter from Henry Mitchell, Boston to Messrs Robert Brown & Co, Charleston, 25 November 1777;
  • SP 11: business letter from Philip Moore and Mungo Mackay, Boston, to Archibald and John Blair, merchants, St Pierre, Martinique, 15 December 1777;
  • SP 12: business letter from Archibald & John Blair, Boston, to Alexander Chisholm, Charleston, 7 December 1777.
