Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Modesty (commander William Brown).

Capture history: an American privateer (30 tons, 6 guns, 18 men) bound on a cruise; taken on 2 April 1783 off Sandy Hook, New Jersey by the loyalist privateer Vigilant (George Barnwell commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by George Barnwell, 17 April 1783;
  • [CP 2]: deposition of John Collins of New York, mate, 19 April 1783.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1 :-

  • SP 1: printed privateer commision, owners William Morris and others of Providence, Rhode Island, endorsed with description of Brown and of Ignatius Pitts lieutenant, 24 January 1783.
