Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Mary (master unknown).

History: an American merchant ship (brigantine), bound to some rebel port [Salem], laden with sugar, rum, coffee; taken on 6 November 1780 in latitude 43°23'N, longitude 64°20'W from London, by HMS Prudent (Thomas Burnet commanding), and brought into New York, where she was claimed by Messrs Cathcart and Mowat as a recapture of a Loyalist ship from Jamaica.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: affidavit as to papers.
  • [CP 2-CP 4]: writ and appraisement, and sale of cargo.

Ship's Papers:

  • SP 1: ship's log, now presumed to be that of the Mary and added from HCA 30/753/7 on 9 December 2024. A prize taken by Americans John Buffinton and Brook [John Buffinton captain of the True American, a Salem privateer, and John Brookes, his lieutenant], sailing from 78° 02W 32° 15N [near Charleston, South Carolina] to Salem, Massachusetts. On 2 November the position given in the log was 42° 24N, which is the latitude of Salem, and the last entry is for 6 November. So,a ship taken by the Americans, retaken by the British near Salem around the 6 or 7 November 1780. Mary is the best candidate by date, location, and the affidavit of papers which records a paper (not found) and a book i.e. this log.
