Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Martha (master William Gregory).

History: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 150 tons, 8 men), bound from Boston, Massachusetts to Charleston, South Carolina, laden with boards, cider, besides ballast; taken on 3 January 1778 about a day's sailing from South Carolina in latitude 36°30'N, longitude 71°W by the privateer Marlborough (George Dawson commanding), and brought into Liverpool.

  • [CP 1]: allegation.
  • [CP 2]: pages 1-6: standing and two sets of additional interrogatories [MISSING as of 21 July 2023].
  • [CP 2]: pages 7-17: three examinations, commissioners' affidavit.
  • [CP 3]: attestation as to papers.

Ships Papers:

  • SP 1-SP 2: log and journal of Martha (added from HCA 30/715/9 in July 2023).
  • SP 3: clearance under bond.
  • SP 4: certificate of registry.
  • SP 5, SP 7: mail in transit from Boston to Charlston.
  • SP 6: letter from the owners containing their instructions to the captain.
  • SP 8, SP 9: mail in transit from Boston to Martinique.
