Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Margueritte (master Francois Carosin).

History: a French merchant ship (200 tons, 2 guns, 15 men, 2 passengers), bound from Brest to the [French Caribbean or French India] in convoy, laden with clothing for soldiers and sailors, provisions, cannon balls; taken on 12 December 1781 by HMS Arethusa (Sir Richard Pearson commanding) in sight of Admiral Kempenfelt's squadron [one of 15 naval transports taken in the Second Battle of Ushant], and brought into Portsmouth.

Court papers: 1-7; Ship's papers: 8-11. [These are interim paper numbers, and are likely to change once more fully catalogued].
