Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Hope (master George Robinson).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 100 tons, 10 men) bound from Baltimore, Maryland to Cadiz, laden with tobacco; taken on 2 April 1783 in latitude 38°N by privateer Digby (John Laughton commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to Spain.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers (numbered 1-4) brought in by the prize master John Walker lieutenant, 6 April 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Laughton v The brigantine Hope and her cargo, 10 April 1782;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of George Robinson late of Cumberland, England, now of Maryland, 11 April 1782;
  • [CP 4]: monition, 10 April 1782;
  • [CP 5]: acount of sale of the brigantine for payment of salvage [as a retaken British ship], net proceeds £68 12s, 20 June 1782.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 1 May 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (Maryland papers):-

  • SP 1: clearance, 28 March 1782;
  • SP 2: list of provisions, 28 March 1782;
  • SP 3: ship's register as a prize, owner William Pattinson and brothers, and John Smith, William Smith, and John Smith junior of Baltimore, 27 March 1782;
  • SP 4: certificate of sale as a prize, condemned in Maryland in November 1782, and sold 7 December 1782 to Samuel Smith and others, 27 March 1782.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-5; Ship's papers: 6-9 (large pencil numbers): one paper added from HCA 49/91, one paper moved to HCA 359/6A in 2025. All sorted and renumbered in 2025].
