Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Hercules (master Thomas Sample).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 60 tons, 3 men, 1 passenger) bound from the Morris River [Maurice River], New Jersey to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with lumber; taken on 16 March 1781 in the Delaware Bay by the loyalist privateer Trimmer (Levin Turner commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Richard Ketchum, 21 March 1781;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Turner v The schooner Hercules and her cargo, 21 March 1781;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 21 March 1781;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of James Wheaten of Pennslyvania, common hand, 26 March 1781.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 11 April 1781].

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
