Captured ship: Harlequin (master William Malen), alleged to be the John and Sally (master Rufus Gardner)
History: an American merchant ship with a letter of marque (schooner, 60 or 75 tons, 6 guns, 12 men, 2 passengers), bound from St Martin to Providence, Rhode Island, laden with salt, sugar, gin; taken on 12 August 1780 off Block Island, Rhode Island by HMS Charlestown (Henry Francis Evans commanding), and HMS Raleigh (James Gambier commanding), and brought into New York. A contested cause (120 folios), with a detailed deposition by Mathias Kelly ship-joiner of New York, comparing work done on 1778 to the cabin of the John and Sally with the cabin of the Harlequin.
