Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Happy Return (master Houghton).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 60 tons), laden with sugar, rum; taken on 16 February 1779 in latitude 39°N, longitude 75°W off Sinepuxent, Maryland by the loyalist privateers Germaine (Robert Campbell commanding), and Castor (Thomas Webster commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Thomas Mitchell, first lieutenant of the Germaine, 24 February 1779;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Campbell and Webster v The schooner Happy Return and her cargo, 24 February 1779;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 24 February 1779.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 17 March 1779].

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
