Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: General Green (commander Gideon Olmstead).

Capture history: an American privateer (brigantine, 130 tons, 16 guns, 83 men), on a cruise; taken on 7 May 1782 in latitude 41°N, longitude 69°W by the loyalist privateer Virginia (Stanton Hazard commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Hazard v The brigantine General Green, 15 May 1782;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Charles McLean, second lieutenant, 16 May 1782.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5:-

  • SP 1: printed instructions of Congress, 7 April 1781;
  • SP 2: printed privateer commission, with description of Gideon Olmstead and Lieutenant Israel Denning on the reverse, 17 April 1782;
  • SP 3: crew list and agreement.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2; Ship's papers: 3-7 (large pencil numbers): 2 papers moved to HCA 32/339/10. All sorted and renumbered in 2025].
