Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: General Green (master Phineas Platt).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 30 tons, 4 men) bound from Toms River, New Jersey to Newport, Rhode Island, laden with cedar boards, shingles, bayberry wax or tallow; taken on 30 July 1782 about 5 leagues from Sandy Hook, New Jersey by HMS Hussar (Thomas McNamara Russell commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of McNamara Russell v The sloop General Green and her cargo, 7 August 1782;
  • [CP 2]: deposition of Benajmin Burton mate, of Philadelphia, 13 August 1752 ;
  • [CP 3]: answer and claim of Joseph Stansbury merchant of New York and Pennsylvania on behalf of Thomas Salter, Phineas Platt and John Platt of Toms River, New Jersey, owners of the General Green and her cargo, and long-term loyalist suppliers of HM Garrison and Navy at New York, 14 August 1782;
  • [CP 4]: replication of Thomas McNamara Russell;
  • [CP 5]: rejoinder of Joseph Stansbury;
  • [CP 6]: deposition of Samuel Johnson mariner of Monmouth County, New Jersey, 25 August 1782.

  • SP 1: ship's register, New Brunswick in New Jersey, 18 July 1782;
  • SP 2: permit from Jonathan Deare, Naval Officer, New Jersey for the same cargo to Newpport, Rhode Island, 12 July 1782;
  • SP 3: clearance from New Brunswick, in New Jersey, to Newport, Rhode Island, 18 July 178212/07/2025
  • SP 4: a permit for the sloop Venus, Barzillai Haines master, to leave Brunswick in ballast for the Toms River to take in lumber for New York, issued by William Franklin, "Governor of New Jersey" and [Harker ?] a senior officer of HM ships, New York, 10 July 1780;
  • SP 5: an empty envelope addressed to "His Excellency Jonathan Trumbull".
