Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: General Glover (commander Nicholas Bartlett).

Capture history: an American privateer (brigantine, 100 tons, 14 guns, 66 men) bound from Marblehead, Massachusetts on a cruise; taken on 19 September 1779 in latitude 39°N, about 100 leagues from the coast of America by HMS Maidstone (William Parker commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-18) brought in by William Parker, 13 October 1779;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of Nicholas Bartlett, Thomas Elkins and Samuel Perry, all of Marblehead, commissioners' affidavit, and transmission of papers, taken at Portsmouth, 13 October 1779;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 13 November 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-18:-

  • SP 1: printed privateer commission, 24 August 1779
  • SP 2: [wanting];
  • SP 3: owners instructions: any prisoners of war must be properly handcuffed and not released until arrival at Marblehead, 3 September 1779;

  • SP 9: calculations of latitude;
  • SP 10: list of shares, money calcualtions, provisions;
  • SP 11: list of the starboard watch;
  • SP 12: list of the larboard watch;
  • SP 13: articles of agreement and muster roll, 9 September 1779;
  • SP 14: Jonathan Glover's book, 26 August-4 September 1779;
  • SP 15: bill of provisions on board, 3 September 1779;
  • SP 16: [wanting];
  • SP 17: Nicholas Bartlett's journal, covering this cruise and one on the armed brig America from Spetember 1778 to February 1779;
  • SP 18: Nicholas Bartlett's notebook, when commanding the privateer America, from 26 April 1777.
