Captured ship: General Gathe otherwise Le General Gates of Bordeaux (master Bernard Imbert), formerly the English ship John of Newcastle (master Thomas Lane).
History: a French merchant ship (300 tons, 22 men), laden with salt, tea, dry goods, wine, brandy; taken on 7 or 8 February 1779 in latitude 45°50'N, by the privateer Achilles (William Yawkins commanding), and the privateer Hector (Thomas Naftel commanding); retaken on 10 February 1779 by two French frigates L'Inconstante and La Surveillant came on board and took off all the English prize crew, except James Snook who concealed himself; after discovery and in bad weather he took the helm on the request of French prize master and persuaded the French prize crew into thinking they were steering for Belle Isle whereas they were headed for Guernsey where they arrived on 13 February 1779.
