Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: General Gates (master Robert Conway).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 40 tons, abandoned by her crew after firing of guns), laden with tobacco; taken on 14 June 1779 in Wycomoco Creek, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia by HMS Otter (Richard Creyk commanding), HMS Haerlem (Lieutenant Joshua Rodgers commanding), and the privateers Lord North (Charles McDonald commanding), Dunmore (William Goodrich commanding), and Hammond (Bridger Goodrich commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to [unknown].

  • [CP 2]: monition, 25 June 1779;
  • [CP 3]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Creyk v The sloop General Gates and her cargo, 26 June 1779;
  • [CP 4]: answer and claim of James King merchant of New York for himself and others, for joint capture, 6 October 1779.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 16 July 1779].
