Description

British Vice-Admiralty Court of New York.

Captured ship: General Gates (master Thomas Steel).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 90 tons, 12 men) bound from Alexandria, Virginia to Bordeaux, laden with tobacco, staves; taken on 8 April 1778 in latitude 37°N, longitude 74°W off the Capes of Virginia by the loyalist privateer Levant of Bristol (John Martin commanding), and brought into New York. [See also HCA 32/264/3 for a protest]

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers (no papers) brought in by the prize master John Alexander, third mate, 15 April 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Martin v The sloop General Gates and her cargo, 15 April 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Thomas Steel, 17 April 1778 (owners are Thomas Russell, William Hamond and John McIver).
