Captured ship: General Gates (master Thomas Steel).
History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 90 tons, 12 men) bound from Alexandria, Virginia to Bordeaux, laden with tobacco, staves; taken on 8 April 1778 in latitude 37°N, longitude 74°W off the Capes of Virginia by the loyalist privateer Levant of Bristol (John Martin commanding), and brought into New York.
