Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: General Galvez (commander James Montgomery).

History: an American privateer (brigantine, 170 tons, 8 guns, 36 men, 4 passengers) bound from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Havana, Cuba, laden with sugar, specie (dollars); taken on 24 May 1782 off Cape Henry, Capes of Virginia by HMS Carysfort (William Peacock commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Peacock v The brig General Galvez and her cargo, 29 May 1782;
  • [CP 2]: monition, 29 May 1782;
  • [CP 3]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master William Russell, second lieutenant, 30 May 1782;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of James Montgomery, born in Ireland, 31 May 1782.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 19 June 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Pennsylvania papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, 21 December 1781;
  • SP 2: printed privateer commission, with a description of Montgomery and the mate Charles Nuttle on the reverse, 21 December 1781;
  • SP 3-SP 5: bills of lading.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-9 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
