Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: General Gadsden (master George Leacy).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brig, 90 tons, 10 men) bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Amsterdam, laden with rice, tobacco; taken on 17 September 1777 in latitude 34°N, longitude 76°W by HMS Galatea (Thomas Jordan commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Netherlands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers (numbered 1-7) brought in by the prize master Robert Causzor, acting lieutenant, 10 October 1777 ;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Jordan v The brig General Gadsden and her cargo, 13 October 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-7 (South Carolina papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register;
  • SP 2: bill of lading, 27 August 1777;
  • SP 3: crew list and agreement, 27 August 1777;
  • SP 4-SP 5: invoice of cargo consigned by Messrs Blakes & Sawyer;
  • SP 5: business letter from Messrs Blakes & Sawyer, Charleston, to William R N Howell, 25 August 1777;
  • SP 5: business letter from John Joules to William R N Howell, 28 August 1777;
  • SP 7: business letter from Messrs Blakes & Sawyer, Charleston, to William R N Howell, 28 August 1777.
