Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Friendship of Alexandria (master Robert Conway).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 34 tons, 6 guns, 10 men) bound from Alexandria, Virginia to Martinique, laden with flour, tobacco, staves; taken on 24 August 1778 in latitude 34°N, longitude 72°W by the loyalist privateer George and Elizabeth (James Ridley commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Ridley v The sloop Friendship and her cargo, 2 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Richard Spence, 11 September 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-6 (Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1: manuscript ship's register, owner Richard Conway & Co, South Potowmack, 23 April 1778;
  • SP 2: clearance bond, for Martinique, 13 August 1778;
  • SP 3: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 4: memorandum;
  • SP 5-SP 6: invoices of cargo, on account of Richard Conway & Co, Alexandria, 11 August 1778.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2; Ship's papers: 3-4 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025. Some papers added from HCA 32/330/18 in 2025].
