Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Friendship (master William Ellingwood).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 110 tons, 7 men) bound from Beverly, Massachusetts to Surinam, laden with dried fish, boards, staves, herring and onions; taken on 29 December 1777 in latitude 37°30'N, longitude 51° W by the privateer Tom (John Lee commanding), and brought into Liverpool.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean mainland.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-3) brought in by the prize master Hugh Quick, second mate, 21 April 1778;
  • [CP 2]: two depositions of Thomas Ellingwood and Herbert Ellingwood, both of of Beverly, commissioners' affidavit, taken at Liverpool, 21 April 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 23 May 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3:-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners Nicholas Thorndike, Larkin Thorndike, Thomas Stevens, John Lovit and Elezer Gilles, Salem, 15 December 1777;
  • SP 2: clearance bond, Salem, 15 December 1777;
  • SP 3: owners instructions, Beverly, 13 December 1777.
