Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Friends of Glasgow (late master Duncan McFarland, and the American prize master Joseph Greene).

Capture history: a Scottish merchant ship (brig, 90 tons) , bound from Grenada to an English port, laden with rum; taken by the USS Providence ([Abraham] Whipple commanding), USS Boston ([Samuel] Tucker commanding), and USS Ranger ( Thomas Simpson commanding) and sent into Portsmouth, New Hampshire; retaken on 21 September 1778 in latitude 45°50'N, longitude 37°50'W by the privateers Thomas Hall of Liverpool (Andrew Beard commanding), and Royal George of London (Samuel Hill commanding), and brought into Liverpool.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to England.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-10 [but not yet found]) brought in by the prize master Bryan Smith chief mate of the Thomas Hall, 16 November 1778;
  • [CP 2]: deposition of Benjamin Quint of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, shoemaker, who shipped as an ordinary seaman on the Congresss frigate Providence, being a packet ship for carrying letters between America and France, that they arrived at Nantes after 34 days, and fell in with the Boston, going in company to Brest where they were joined by the Ranger, and sailed together for Boston, Massachusetts at the end of August; after taking the prize, they heard that the Jamaica fleet of English merchantmen was at sea, so they sent off the brig by herself, and went to find the Jamaica ships; also commissioners' affidavit, taken at Liverpool, 16 November 1778;

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 10 - not found.
