Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Franklin of Salem, Massachusetts (commander Silas Devol).

History: an American privateer (ship, 200 tons, 16 guns, 61 men), taken on 3 April 1782 off the Capes of Viriginia by HMS Amphion (John Bazely commanding), and HMS Amphitrite (Robert Biggs commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Bazeley v The privateer ship Franklin, 10 April 1782;
  • [CP 2]: monition, 10 April 1782;
  • [CP 3]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master James Richery, master's mate of HMS Amphion, 11 April 1782;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Silas Devol of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, 13 April 1782.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 1 May 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: printed privateer commission, 14 December 1781.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-6 (large pencil numbers): 1 paper moved to HCA 32/332/8 in 2025. All sorted and renumbered in 2025].
