Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Franklin (master Aaron Jeffery).

History: an American merchant ship with a letter of marque (brigantine, 90 tons, 8 guns, 17 men) bound from Cadiz to Portsmouth, Virginia, laden with salt, wine, brandy, fruit and various other mechandise; taken on 6 May 1779, about 7 leagues NE of Cape Charles, Virginia by HMS Delaware (Christopher Mason commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Robert Aitchison, master's mate, 12 May 1779;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Mason v The brigantine Franklin and her cargo, 12 May 1779;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two depositions of Bartholomew Thompson of Virginia, passenger, and Aaron Jeffery, both of Virginia, 19 May 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3:-

  • SP 1: printed privateer commission, Williamsburg, 4 March 1778;
  • SP 2: invoice of cargo;
  • SP 3: bill of lading.
