Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Francis of St Eustatius (master Thomas Baker).

Capture history: an American (or Dutch) merchant ship (sloop, 50 tons) bound from St Eustatius to Edlington [Edenton], North Carolina, laden with salt; taken on 21 April 1777 in latitude 33°40'N, longitude 74°30'W by HMS Galatea (Thomas Jordan commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: two depositions of Thomas Baker master and William Streater common mariner, 26 September 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Jordan v The sloop Francis and her cargo, 29 September 1777;
  • [CP 3]: affidavit of papers (no papers) brought in by the prize master William Augustus Merrick, lieutenant, 10 October 1777.
