Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Fox (master Mark Collins).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 80 tons, 8 guns, 13 men) bound from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Havana, Cuba, laden with flour; taken on 21 April 1782 off the Delaware south of Cape Henlopen by HMS Belisarius (Admiral Richard Graves commanding), HMS Pearl (George Montagu commanding), HMS Grana (Chichester Fortescue commanding), HMS Quebec (Christopher Mason commanding), HMS Rotterdam (John Knowles commanding), HMS Magicienne (William Scott commanding), HMS Orpheus (John Colpoys commanding), HMS Charlestown (Rupert George commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Soper midshipman, 1 May 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Graves v The brigantine Fox and her cargo, 1 May 1782;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 1 May 1782;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Mark Collins born in Ireland, now of Philadelphia, 2 May 1782;

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 21 May 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1 (Pennsylvania papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owner Isaac Moses and others, 27 August 1781.
