Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Fox (master Isaac Wentworth).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (75 tons, 4 guns, 9 men) bound from Williamsburg, Virginia to San Sebastian, laden with tobacco; taken on 7 September 1778 in latitude 43°30'N by the privateer Hawke (John Sandford commanding), and brought into Weymouth.

Intended voyage: from the United States to Spain.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-4) brought in by John Sandford, sworn at Guernsey 24 September and at Weymouth, 26 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of Isaac Wentworth of Piscatagua, mariner, John Armstrong merchant of Maryland, and Caesar Le Franc of Calais, mariner commissioners' affidavit, taken at St Peter Port, Guernsey, 24 September 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 4 November 1778

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1: bill of lading;
  • SP 2: oath;
  • SP 3: ships register, 28 July 1778;
  • SP 4: clearance.
