Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Fanny (master Thomas Prizgar).

History: a Bermudan [British] merchant ship (schooner, 30 or 40 tons, 8 men) bound from Bermuda to Halifax, Nova Scotia laden with sugar, salt, junk; taken on 9 May 1779 in latitude 37°10'N, longitude 75°W by the loyalist privateer Revenge (Anthony Stewart or Stuart commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by Stewart, 17 May 1779;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Stewart v The schooner Fanny, 19 May 1779 ;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Thomas Prizgar, 5 June 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-7:-

  • SP 1-2: clearances from Bermuda;
  • SP 3: certificate that the Fanny was taken as a prize by HMS Ariadne and condemned in the Vice-Admiralty Court of Antigua on 3 June 1778;
  • SP 4: clearance;
  • SP 5: licence to taken on board 5 crew members, named;
  • SP 6: licence to depart Bermuda for Halifax, 30 April 1779;
  • SP 7: log or journal covering July 1778 to 8 May 1779, with a copy letter from Liverpool, Nova Scotia, 22 September 1778 [to the owners].
