Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Fancy (master Oliver Gleason).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 52 tons, 7 men) bound from Surinam to Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, laden with dry goods, rum, molasses, cocoa, salt, coffee, cotton; taken on 29 May 1778 in latitude 39°12'N, longitude 71°W by HMS Lark (Richard Smith commanding), HMS Mermaid (James Hawker commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master William Dunlop, master's mate of HMS Lark, 10 June 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of ;Smith v The sloop Fancy, 10 June 1778
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Oliver Gleason, 10 June 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: clearance from Burlington, New Jersey, 19 January 1778;
  • SP 2: clearance from Surinam, 1 May 1778.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
