Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Fancy of Edenton (master John Steele).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 35 tons, 6 men) bound from Ocracoke, North Carolina to St Eustatius, laden with tobacco; taken on 4 June 1778 near Ocracoke Bar by HMS Ariel (Charles Phipps commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Phipps v The sloop Fancy, 26 June 1778;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Hay, clerk, 6 July 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of John Steele.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2 (North Carolina papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, 17 May 1778;
  • SP 2: clearance.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
