Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Fame of Boston (commander Joseph Costin).

Capture history: an American merchant ship with letter of marque (110 tons, 5 men, 3 passengers), bound from Amsterdam to Boston, Massachusetts, laden with china, tea, sail cloth, steel, nails, silks, linen cloth, woollen cloth, hardware, cutlery; taken on 26 November 1780 on the banks of Newfoundland in latitude 45°N by HMS Danae ([Thomas Lloyd] commanding), and brought first into Waterford, and then into Cork, Ireland.

Intended voyage: from the Netherlands to the United States.

Court papers:

  • [CP 1]: standing and additional interrogatories;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of Edward Jones merchant of Boston, David Chase and Nicholas Stoddard, mariners of Boston, at Cork, 23 January 1781;
  • [CP 3- CP 4]: warrant and commissioners' affidavit, Cork, 23 January 1781;
  • [CP 5]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-21) brought in by the prize master John Prowse, lieutenant of HMS Danae, 23 January 1781;
  • [CP 6]: translation from Dutch of SP 5 only.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-21, including mail in transit (in English) from Amsterdam to merchants in Boston (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1: logbook, covering 12 May-23 November 1780;
  • SP 2: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 3: ship's register;
  • SP 4: bill of health from Amsterdam (in Latin);
  • SP 5: ship's pass (in Dutch);
  • SP 6-SP 7: expenses (in Dutch).
  • SP 8: personal letter from Francis De Blois, Rouen to his brother Gilbert De Bois, Boston, 1 October 1780;
  • SP 9: business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to his brother Mr Tilly Merrick, Boston, 1-25 Sept 1780 , enclosing SP 9A bill of lading and SP 9B invoice of cargo;
  • SP 10: business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to Mrs Margaret Scott, Boston, 2-20 Sept 1780 , enclosing SP 10A bill of lading and SP 10B invoice of cargo;
  • SP 11: business note from Cornelis Schenkhouse, Amsterdam to David Sears, Boston, enclosing SP 11A-C, bill of lading and two invoices of cargo;
  • SP 12: business letter from Cornelis Schenkhouse, Amsterdam to David Sears, Boston, 2 Oct 1780;
  • SP 13: envelope enclosing SP 13A, business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to William Greenleaf, Boston, 22 Aug-2 Sept 1780, plus SP 13B-D bills of lading and invoices, and SP 13E, business letter to Dr Ammi R Cutter, Portsmouth, [New Hampshire], 1-20 Sept 1780;
  • SP 14: business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to Jacob Treadwell, Portsmouth, 1-20 Sept 1780;
  • SP 15: envelope addressed to Nicholas Bartlett, Marblehead, enclosing SP 15A-B bills of lading for goods consigned to Miss Hanner Bartlett [Hannah Bartlett?];
  • SP 16: delivered business letter from Parish & Thurman, Hamburg, to Benjamin Guild, Amsterdam, 5 Sept 1780, enclosing SP 16A-B, account current and invoice;
  • SP 17: business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to Caleb Hopkins, Boston, 20 Sept 1780, enclosing SP 17A-B, bill of lading and invoice;
  • SP 18: delivered envelope to Messrs De La Lande & Tynje, Amsterdam, enclosing SP 18A business letter from Nicholas Jay, London to Edward Jonet, 27 June 1780, which once enclosed a letter to Jay's brother;
  • SP 19: business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to Samuel Eliot, Boston, 22 August-20 Sept 1780, enclosing SP 19A-B account current and invoice;
  • SP 20: business letter from Duncan Ingraham, Amsterdam to Jonathan Amory, Boston, enclosing SP 20A-B, bill of lading and invoice;
  • SP 21: business letter from Thomas Willson, Amsterdam to David Sears, Boston by favour of Edward Jones, 6 Oct 1780, enclosing SP 21A-B, bills of lading; intends to visit the manufactories in England 'to procure a large assortment of allsorts fit for the American trade'.
