Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Fame (commander John Taylor).

History: an American merchant ship with a letter of marque (brigantine, 30 tons, 9 guns, 47 men) bound on a cruise; taken on 8 April 1781 at Sandy Hook [New Jersey] by HMS Orpheus (John Colpoys commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Hugh Drake, master's mate, 12 March [recte April] 1781;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Colpoys v The privateer brig Fame, 12 April 1781;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 12 April 1781;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of John Taylor of Pennsylvania, 20 April 1781.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 2 May 1781].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1 (Pennsylvania paper):-

  • SP 1: printed privateer commission, 19 March 1781.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
