Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: L'Este (master not named).

History: a [French] ship (brigantine, 130 tons); taken on 17 September 1777 in Ocracoke Harbour, North Carolina by the loyalist privateer Favourite Betsey (Daniel Squier commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-6:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by Squier, 13 October 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Squier v The brigantine L'Este, 13 October 1777;
  • [CP 3]: release of interest by Craddock Kennett chief mate of the Favourite Betsey [and prize master?], 3 November 1777;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Craddock Kennett, 4 November 1777;
  • [CP 5]: interrogatories.
  • [CP 6]: accounts of sale of the brigantine L'Este, condemned to the King [as droits of the crown]; net proceeds £796 4s 1d, 1 December 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: logbook, 26 July-14 August 1777.
