Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Endeavour of Newburyport (master Samuel McLellan).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 50 tons, 4 men) bound from Boston to Norfolk, Virginia, laden with salt, lumber and sugar; taken on 26 March 1778, near the Capes of Virginia by the Hotham, tender to HMS Preston (Samuel Uppleby commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Christopher Hele, mate, 4 April 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Uppleby v The sloop Endeavour and her cargo, 8 April 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Samuel Lowell of Newburyport, Massachusetts, mate, 16 April 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-11 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, 17 December 1777;
  • SP 2: clearance, 17 December 1777;
  • SP 3: printed pass for the Danish Caribbean islands, St Croix, 3 May 1777;
  • SP 4: manuscript pass for the Danish Caribbean islands, St Croix, 26 March 1776;
  • SP 5: small logbook, 1775;
  • SP 6-SP 8: small accounts, Boston, March 1778;
  • SP 9-SP 11: various calculations.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-25 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025. Several ship's papers moved to HCA 32/285/6].
