Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Emilia of Philadelphia (master Edward Dickinson).

History: an American merchant ship (schooner, 30 tons, 9 men) bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with sugar, coffee; taken on 9 April 1781 off Cape May, New Jersey by HMS Chatham (John Orde commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Thomas Mullock, master at arms, 10 April 1781;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Orde v The schooner Emilia, 10 April 1781;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 18 April 1781;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Jean Criseaux, seaman, 19 April 1781

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 8 May 1781].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-12:-

  • SP 1-SP 2: official ships papers;
  • SP 3: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 4-SP 10: ships business papers;
  • SP 11-SP 12: bills of lading.
