Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Elizabeth (master Alexander Ray).

History: an American whaling ship (schooner, 50 tons) bound from Nantucket, Massachusetts; taken on 2 September 1777 in latitude 40°17'N, longitude 70°W by the English privateer Peace and Plenty (Charles McKenzie commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by McKenzie, 16 September 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in McKenzie v The schooner Elizabeth, 17 September 1777;
  • [CP 3-CP 5]: three depositions of Alexander Ray, Reuben Ray and Linsey Wharton, Quakers, 23 September 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1-SP 3: official ship's papers;
  • SP 4: ship's business paper;
  • SP 5: copy of the privateer commission of the Peace and Plenty.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-5; Ship's papers: 6-9 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
