Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Elizabeth (master David Robinson).

History: an American merchant ship (schooner, 70 or 80 tons, 6 men) bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Nantes, laden with rice, turpentine, indigo; taken on 14 August 1777 in latitude 47°14'N by the privateer Hawke (Samuel Gribble commanding), and brought into Falmouth.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: standing and additional interrogatories, two depositions of Benjamin Fuller mate, of Plymouth in Devon and in Massachusetts, Christian Thrane of Sweden, common seaman, commissioners' affidavit, taken at Falmouth, 22-25 August 1777;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers [numbered 1-10] brought in by the prize master Richard Marsingall, fourth lieutenant, 25 August 1777;
  • [CP 4]: attestation as to the perishing nature of the cargo, caused by shipping water in a storm, 8 September 1777;
  • [CP 4]: allegation, 2 October 1777.

  • SP 1-SP 2: bills of lading;
  • SP 3: ship's register, Tobias Cambridge and Thomas Eveleigh owners, 13 June 1777;
  • SP 4: business letter from [Thomas Eveleigh] to George Eveleigh, care of William Freeman, merchant, Bristol, 2 July 1777;
  • SP 5: business letter from Francis Baker, Charleston, to William Savage merchant, care of John Lloyd, merchant, Nantes, 5 July 1777;
  • SP 6: business letter from Samuel Legaré, Charleston, enclosing a bill of lading (SP 2), to Jacques Gruell, Nantes, 3 July 1777;
  • SP 7: clearance;
  • SP 8: bill of health, Charleston;
  • SP 9: invoice of cargo shipped by Thomas Eveleigh;
  • SP 10: business letter from Thomas Eveleigh, Charleston, enclosing a letter to his father George Eveleigh (SP 4), to Jacques Gruell, Nantes, 2 July 1777: includes a detailed order for sundries from Nantes, such as 2000 yards of 'negro cloth', 2000 lbs of Epsom salts or Glauber salts, etc.
