Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Eagle (master Leveridge Stephens).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 30-40 tons), bound from Goodwives River, Connecticut, to Norwich, Connecticut, laden with flour and wheat; taken on 10 June 1778 at Goodwives River by HMS Diligent (Thomas Farnham commanding) and by HMS Troy (John Henry commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Daniel Madde, surgeon, 15 June 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Farnham v The sloop Eagle, 15 June 1778;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: depositions of Jonathan Bridgen and Leveridge Stevens, 15 June 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: invoice for flour.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
