Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Eagle (master James Starr).

History: an American merchant ship (schooner, 60 tons), bound from St Thomas, Danish West Indies, to Philadelphia, laden with salt, rum and dry goods; taken on 20 November 1781 about 25 leagues from the Capes of Virginia by HMS Centurion (Samuel Wittewronge Clayton commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Clayton v Part of the cargo of the schooner Eagle, 12 December 1781;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by Clayton, 14 December 1781;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 12 December 1781.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 1 January 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-23 (Pennsylvania papers):-

  • SP 1-SP 4: official ships papers;
  • SP 5: logbook or journal with no cover, 144 written pages, 22 August 1779-20 November 1781;
  • SP 6-SP 7: rough notes for the journal;
  • SP 8: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 8A: owners' instructions of John Harmanson and John Williams, Philadelphia, 1 August 1781;
  • SP 9-SP 22: ship's business papers, with many from St Thomas;
  • SP 23: paper from a previous ship Seaflower; receipt for tea, James Starr, Bordeaux 11 August 1777

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-25 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025; SP 23 added from HCA 32/389/14].
