Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Dolphin of Philadelphia (master Joseph Ashbourn).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (60-70 tons, 11 men) bound from Nantes to Edenton, North Carolina laden with woollen clothes, woollens and other merchandise; taken on 9 July 1778 in latitude 46°8'N, longitude 4°W by the privateer Aeolus of Jersey (Philip Giffard commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: from France to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: three depositions of Joseph Ashbourn of Philadelphia, and of Barnaby Faran and Patrick Connell, both of Rush near Dublin, Ireland, commissioners' affidavit, taken at Jersey, 18-21 July 1778;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-.3) brought in by Philip Giffard, 24 July 1778;
  • [CP 3]: translation of ship's papers;
  • [CP 4]: allegation, 5 September 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3:-

  • SP 1: French ship's pass, from Nantes to Madeira, 20 June 1778;
  • SP 2: undated bill of lading, of goods shipped from Nantes by RG;
  • SP 3: cocket from Paimboeuf.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-6; Ship's papers: 7-9 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
