Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Diana (commander Richard Chilcott).

Capture history: an American privateer (250 tons, 30 men) bound from Boston, Massachusetts to Fredericksburg, Virginia, laden with"two boxes content unknown"; taken on 15 February 1783 off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina by HMS Chatham (Andrew Snape Douglas commanding), HMS Sophie (Henry Mowatt commanding), and HMS Carolina (Alexander Cochrane commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Douglas v The ship Diana, 24 February 1783;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Phillips, 14 March 1783;
  • [CP 3]: wrapper.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1-SP 2: official ships papers;
  • SP 3: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 4: privateer commission, issued by Congress, 20 January 1783;
  • SP 5: bill of lading.
